Alex Papiez serves as a Senior Habitat Specialist for the Thurston Conservation District (TCD), bringing over a decade of experience in natural resource management. Prior to joining TCD, Alex worked as a Restoration Biologist for the Skokomish Indian Tribe’s Natural Resources Department, where he played a key role in developing and implementing instream salmon habitat projects.
Throughout his career, Alex has held various roles, including Stewardship Coordinator for the Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group, Crew Supervisor with the Washington Conservation Corps, and Engine Leader for the Washington Department of Natural Resources’ Wildland Firefighting program. Alex has a diverse background with a focus in salmon habitat restoration, project management, grant writing, habitat monitoring, GIS and drone technologies, riparian enhancement, and best management practices for noxious weed control.
Alex holds a bachelor’s degree in Geography with a minor in GIS from Western Washington University, College of the Environment. He was born and raised in Thurston County and is a graduate of North Thurston High School.
In his free time, Alex enjoys exploring the Olympic and Cascade Mountains, splitboarding, mountain biking, backpacking, swimming, playing piano, live music and hanging loose with his dog Buck.
