The Thurston Conservation District hosts the South Puget Sound Regional Envirothon competition annually each spring at the Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge. This year’s competition will take place on Tuesday, April 24th.

Registration will begin in January. Now is the time to begin forming teams and studying the topics. If you are interested in forming a team, have questions, or want to receive email updates, information on workshops, and most importantly the registration packet in January, please contact Rachel Nehemiah by emailing, calling 360-754-3588 ext. 110, or filling out the form below.

What is Envirothon?

High school students compete in teams of five in a hands-on outdoor environmental science competition. Students get the chance to demonstrate their knowledge in in Soils, Forestry, Aquatics, Wildlife, and a current issue topic (this year’s is Western Rangeland Management).

Who can compete?

Students grade 9-12 from Mason, Lewis, Grays Harbor, Kitsap, Thurston, and Pierce Counties. Students must be from the same school, home school group, or local organization (i.e. FFA). Last year’s competitors were: Bonney Lake HS, Sumner HS, and SAMI from Pierce, and North Thurston HS from Thurston.

Why compete?

Participation in Envirothon is a huge boost to a student’s résumé or college application. Students get to be part of a team and meet other young people from around the south sound who are interested in environmental science. Teams get access to workshops on relevant environmental topics preceding the event. The winning team gets to attend the state Envirothon, where they’ll compete for a chance to attend the international competition in Idaho.
