Twinberry

Lonicera involucrata

This fast-growing deciduous shrub grows 10-12 feet in height and spreads to 10 feet wide.  Leaves are 1-1/2 to 5 inches long, green and smooth above and below.   The flowers are tubular or trumpet shaped, small (1/2 inch) and paired, surrounded by 2 bracts that turn red.   The paired fruit appear as purple to black berries about 1/4 inch in diameter.  These berries not edible for humans.  Most commonly found growing in moist sides such as stream sides, bogs, and lake shores.  Grows as an under-story species or in exposed, open area.   Great wildlife plant.

Planting Considerations:
Great for riparian and wetland sites. Its roots are effective at soil binding for erosion control. As with any new planting, it should be watered during the dry season for the first 2-3 years.
Planting Problems:
None are noted.
